The Refugee Camp in My Neighbourhood was started in 2014 when former Auburn City Council worked in close collaboration with the local community to identify and develop the project. A wide range of community partners inform all parts of this project, eg. sharing their journeys to Australia; defining the key objectives of the project; designing the tour which detailed the messages of each stop on the tour; assisting with the promotion of the project; recruitment of the tour guides or becoming tour guides and supporting the delivery of the project, making this project a community partnership.
Council’s role was to coordinate this project and be the custodian, ensuring the project reflects the community and its contribution to the Refugee Camp in my Neighbourhood Project truly. Council was granted with deep trust by the community and thanks all partners for their contribution over the years. In 2020 Cumberland City Council withdrew from the Refugee Camp in My Neighbourhood project and its ongoing participation, handing the project to its community project partners.
